National Gallery of Art: Afro-Atlantic Histories

Afro-Atlantic Histories - A Virtual Exhibition Preview for College & University Instructors

The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts is delighted to invite postsecondary educators to a virtual preview of Afro-Atlantic Histories, a forthcoming exhibition on view at the National Gallery of Art from April 10 to July 17, 2022. Afro-Atlantic Histories addresses a variety of time periods, geographic formations, and theoretical concerns. We welcome instructors from all disciplines to learn more about the exhibition. We hope that this early preview will allow educators to plan field trips, design course assignments, and otherwise incorporate Afro-Atlantic Histories into their lesson planning for spring and summer semesters.

Join us for a live exhibition preview led by the three co-curators at the National Gallery:

Kanitra Fletcher, Associate Curator, African American and Afro-Diasporic Art; Molly Donovan, Curator, Contemporary Art; and Steven Nelson, Dean, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts

About the Exhibition:

Afro-Atlantic Histories offers a window into the many narratives, cultural formations, and experiences wrought by the transatlantic slave trade and its legacies. The exhibition will feature approximately 130 works in a variety of media, including paintings, sculptures, time-based media art, photographs, prints, drawings, and ephemera, from the 16th century to the present, by artists from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, the Netherlands, Nigeria, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Uruguay. It explores Diasporic connections, grapples with the violent legacy of slavery, shows the widespread presence and experiences of Black people across social strata, and changes our understanding of Black Atlantic history. This exhibition originally appeared at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil, in 2018.

Please feel free to forward this webinar invitation to any interested colleagues teaching in postsecondary contexts.
